SCOPE AND KEY ISSUES

The aim of this course is to teach three major approaches in microbial biofilm research:

  • Laser scanning microscopy
  • Microsensor technique
  • Mathematical modelling

The course topics include:

  • Biofilm growth devices and reactors
  • Biofilm development and detachment
  • Biofilm processes, gradients, diffusion, kinetics
  • Theory and practical aspects of micro?environmental analysis
  • Theory and application of laser scanning microscopy
  • Digital image analysis for quantification of 3d data
  • Theory and practice of biofilm modelling
